Exciting plans to provide new and improved indoor and outdoor sports and leisure facilities at Boscawen Park in Truro have been given the go ahead by Cornwall Council.
Led by the City Council and funded by Truro Town Deal, the Sports Hub project will see a new multi-use building constructed in Boscawen Park, incorporating new changing facilities, as well as flexible indoor spaces suitable for both indoor sports use and other activities such as conferences, community and family events, workshops and training or arts and crafts groups.
The application was submitted to Cornwall Council as Planning Authority in November 2024 following public consultation. The plans have now received the green light – marking a key milestone in the development of the Sports Hub project.
“This is a major step forward for our Sports Hub project“ said Truro Mayor Carol Swain. “This fantastic project will provide new and improved sports and leisure facilities for local residents and visitors alike, and I am looking forward to seeing the new Boscawen Sports Hub opening its doors to the local community in 2026.”
The multi-use building will provide space for a wide variety of indoor sports such as badminton, table tennis and basketball, together with the community areas and meeting and conference facilities. The outdoor space will include an extended and improved pétanque pitch.
Improvements will also be made to the existing grass playing surfaces that will enable all the pitches to be used for longer periods of the year.
Alan Stanhope, Chair of Truro Town Deal Board, said: “This is a very significant milestone for the Truro Town Deal portfolio of projects. Boscawen Park Sports Hub will leave a lasting legacy of the Town Deal funding in our city, and will be enjoyed people from all areas of our community for many years to come.”
Louis Gardner, Cornwall Council Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Economy, said: “It’s great to see another Town Deal investment moving forward, particularly one which will benefit so many people. This hub is a real step towards our goal of creating a Cornwall where people can start well, live well and age well.”
Truro Town Deal Board, in partnership with Cornwall Council, successfully bid for a Town Deal worth £23.6 million to support a range of projects that will contribute to the city’s regeneration and boost the local economy. Cornwall Council is the lead authority for Cornwall Town Deals and supports the governance role of the Truro Town Deal Board and administrates the fund.
Following the granting of formal planning permission for the Sports Hub, work will now take place on producing the final detailed designs and appointing a contractor for the project who is expected to start construction by the middle of 2025.
