Fingers firmly crossed for success in this year’s South West in Bloom Awards presentation

Tuesday, 3 October will be a very special day for our city as we host the 2023 South West in Bloom Awards presentation.

This year’s Awards ceremony, organised by Truro City Council and Truro in Bloom in partnership with South West in Bloom, will see more than 300 representatives from towns and villages from across the South West waiting to hear if their entry in the annual RHS competition has been chosen as one of the winners.

The ceremony is being held in Truro Cathedral, with guests being formally welcomed by the Mayor, Cllr Carol Swain, and Truro and Falmouth MP Cherilyn Mackrory.

Details of the winners remain a closely guarded secret until the formal announcements on Tuesday afternoon but we are keeping our fingers crossed that our entry will be among them.

We are very proud of our city’s achievements in both the South West in Bloom and Britain in Bloom competitions, having won Gold Awards, including Champion of Champions Gold Medals, in both events in the past.

Once again Truro’s entry was led by members of the Truro in Bloom (TIB) group who worked with our Parks and Gardens department, a range of partners including Biffa, Truro Business Improvement District (BID), Friends of Daubuz Moor and other community groups such as Cornwall Wildlife Trust, and some incredible volunteers to ensure that the city was a riot of colour for the visit by the judges in the summer.

As well as looking at our floral displays, the South West in Bloom judges also assessed what we are doing to protect and improve the environment.  Environmental initiatives included planting pollinator beds in key areas of the city, creating wildlife meadows, and providing log piles, insect hotels and bird and bat boxes to increase habitats for bees and other wildlife at the same time as creating beautiful environments for people.

Community and business representatives also volunteered their time by litter picking and cleaning local areas throughout the city as part of projects organised by Truro and Newham BIDS.

We will publish details of the winners and photos from the event on our website and social media channels so watch this space!
