Maurice Vella

We are very sad to report the sudden death of former councillor Maurice Vella on May 23rd 2024.

Maurice was a true gentleman who dedicated a significant portion of his life to serving the city that he loved.

As well as his successful career as a Chartered Architect, Maurice served as a Truro City councillor for very many years, representing the Moresk ward in which he lived, until he lost his seat at the May 2021 election, and was also a Carrick councillor for the same ward until that council’s abolition in 2009.

Maurice was a long-standing member of the City Council’s Planning Committee and served as its Chairman several times, most recently from 2018 to 2021, where he was both an advocate for high quality building design and a fierce defender of the historic fabric of Truro.

Among his lasting legacies are the knowledge and insights that he was able to pass on to so many current and former councillors and staff; the Truro & Kenwyn Neighbourhood Development Plan, which he ably helped to steer through both its initial development and adoption and the more recent updating; and the Truro Conservation Area Advisory Committee, which is made up of volunteer practitioners d the industry as well as councillors, and enables the City Council to receive the best possible advice about planning matters relating to listed buildings and those in the Conservation Area.

We would like to send our deepest condolences for their loss to Maurice’s wife Sarah, his daughters Nicola and Lizzie and the grandsons on whom he doted.

Maurice’s funeral service will take place on Tuesday, 18th June, at 11am, in the Trelawny Chapel, Penmount Crematorium. Family flowers only.
