Mayor Carol Swain was delighted to officially open the Mid-Cornwall Climate and Eco Hub, the first eco hub in Cornwall, with support from Mayoress Sarah Douglas-Martin and Town Crier Lionel Knight on Saturday morning.
Based at 36a St Austell Street, Truro, the new Hub is one of a growing number of climate emergency centres (CECs) being established across the country to help local people to make changes in their lives so they can reduce their carbon impact, find ways to ease their financial hardship and get involved in restoring and protecting the natural environment.
Set up by friends Marcelle Coburn, Jackie Dash, Alex Glynne, Sarah Pethybridge and Jackie Walkden, the Hub will provide a physical space that will link the community of Mid-Cornwall with environmental, sustainability and climate change-related groups, as well as the county, town and parish councils and green businesses from across Cornwall.
“The Mid-Cornwall Climate and Eco Hub will provide a vital resource to provide the information, education and encouragement required to enable us all to press forward with these ambitious plans, for the sake of all of our children, our grandchildren and the future generations of Truronians” said Councillor Swain.
“Truro City Council declared a Climate Emergency in 2019, and earlier this year we appointed a Zero Carbon Officer to help us work with partners and local communities to develop effective and practical actions to respond to the climate and ecological emergencies we are all facing”.
To begin with the Hub will be open between 1 pm and 5pm on Tuesdays and between 10 am and 2 pm on Saturdays.
As well as providing information, including a library and displays about the climate and nature crises, with particular focus on the impact on Cornwall, the Hub will offer advice on areas such as insulation, energy reduction, existing and new community energy projects, protecting and restoring nature and depleted habitats, local community farming and food production.
The Hub’s team are currently devising the autumn and winter programme of events, which will include events, film screenings, workshops and regular climate cafés.
